DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, Brian Wainwright has worn just about every hat imaginable\, including educator\, director\, performer\, and technician. To this day\, Brian continues to work with NACC as a fly rigger\, piano tuner\, and set builder. Join him for this two-hour workshop is designed for community performing arts groups who want to learn more about how to safely operate in the NACC space. \n\n\n\nParticipants will get a practical\, walkthrough-based introduction to our backstage areas\, and the load-in/load-out process – all with a focus on safety. \n\n\n\nRegistration is free for this two-hour workshop. DESCRIPTION:ATTI! Indigenous Artists Collectives is proud to launch their inaugural Performing Arts Mentorship Program to empower emerging Indigenous performers in the NWT. This program partners Indigenous musicians\, singer-songwriters\, playwrights\, and dancers with accomplished Indigenous professionals in their field to elevate their craft. This initiative will help support the next generation of Indigenous professional artists by providing in-depth one-on-one training. DESCRIPTION:A CO-PRODUCTION WITH \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTOKARA was founded in Nagano Prefecture\, Japan\, by Wadaiko Artist Art Lee. The group has become a strong force in the world of Wadaiko (Taiko Drumming) both in Japan and internationally. \n\n\n\nWhile incorporating arrangements of traditional Taiko pieces into their performance\, TOKARA has created an all-new style of Taiko\, where electrifying speed and power meet the group’s own arrangements of movement\, incorporating dance and the circular fluidity of the Chinese martial arts and aikido. \n\n\n\nTOKARA’s new style of Taiko music also brings rhythmic signatures from other cultures around the world to create a jazzy and exciting style of taiko music. TOKARA started its international debut with a six-week coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. and Canada\, followed by a two-month tour in 2005\, both to critical acclaim and sold-out audiences. TOKARA has since performed as the main attraction in many events\, including the Hamanako Hanahaku All-Japan Expo and the Taipei City 120th Anniversary World Music Festival. \n\n\n\nSince the group’s inception\, TOKARA tours three to four times a year in Asia\, the U.S.\, various countries in Europe\, Australia\, and India\, as well as making regular appearances at some of the top Taiko performances all over Japan. \n\n\n\nTOKARA continues the intensive process of continually reinventing new pieces and playing styles in an attempt to further develop the group’s originality. His mom bought an accordion at a garage sale for $5. A family friend started teaching him to play by ear. Formal lessons began at 7.Today he performs on a digital accordion – essentially a computer housed in a conventional accordion case that can imitate the sound of just about any instrument you can imagine. He can single-handedly shake the rafters sounding like a full rock drum kit or a symphony orchestra.He’s also a master of the more familiar acoustic accordion\, a soulful\, highly expressive instrument.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWolak received his doctorate from the Paderewski Music Academy in Poznan\, Poland. He grew up in Włocławek\, a small city west of Warsaw. His parents were both professional musicians and by the age of 5\, Wolak was taking piano lessons and dreaming of becoming a famous musician. At 12\, Wolak took up the clarinet and became obsessed with mastering the instrument. At 16 he left home for studies at the conservatory in Poznan. SUMMARY:NACC Presents: Johnny Cole - Meet me at The Rex
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of Metis Roots\n\n\n\nFor fifty years\, Norman Glowach has been playing music in Yellowknife. He started playing the drums\, but he also sings and plays guitar. Growing up in Yellowknife\, Norm has been fortunate to play many styles of music. At an early age\, he played in school bands and stage bands. Professionally\, he’s played old time music\, fiddle music\, country music\, rock & roll\, jazz and blues. These musical experiences all come out in the music he writes and records. He has run his studio\, Spiritwalker Productions\, for over 30 years in downtown Yellowknife. Norm credits the driving force behind his persona Johnny Cole and the musical Meet Me at the Rex to be the pictures and stories of his family’s history. Norman started Meet Me at the Rex eleven years ago when he began searching for ancestors on his mother’s side. At that time\, he was working at the NWT Archives. This gave him an understanding of how to access data from the various levels of archives in Canada. As information and images came forward about his ancestors\, songs started to come to him. At that point\, he didn’t have the idea of creating a production containing these songs – he was just trying to understand his roots. He began to understand his ancestors’ role in the development of Canada.  \n\n\n\nIn his search\, Norm was able to find French and Irish roots in the Red River Colony who mixed with Indigenous peoples\, creating the Métis who populated Western Canada. As the show was coming together\, long-time friends came forward to give him direction. One friend told him the roots he was writing about had a common theme: a story that was similar to that of many other Métis in our country. This gave focus to the project and has been a theme in shaping this show. Norm’s family roots run deep in Canada. Over the years\, the branches stretched to Yellowknife. The production is called Meet Me at the Rex as an homage to Norman’s grandparents\, who were the owners of this popular cafe from 1941 -1966. The Rex was a meeting place and home to many stories of how his family came to Yellowknife. He chose the 1950s time period to tell the story as this was a significant era for the Café. Norm has said\, “At times\, I’ve felt like my ancestors were guiding me in the writing of the songs\, the searching for information\, and are present during the live productions.”  \n\n\n\nCome on in\, sit down\, and have some coffee and pie. DESCRIPTION:By NYATA-NYATA Dance Company\n\n\n\nMozongi (Return) is a piece about time and\, more precisely\, the physics of time. The step is weight\, and weight is time. Not repetition\, but persistence. The structure of Mozongi thus unfolds through the contrasts of movement and immobility\, of the one and of the many\, to give shape to a primordial conflict – that of time\, which consumes space. Zab Maboungou/Compagnie Danse Nyata-Nyata has traced the trajectories of a revised and corrected contemporaneity for more than three decades. Zab Maboungou assumes the general and artistic direction of the company\, founded in 1987. As its choreographer\, and through her renewed art of rhythms and vibrant space\, he creates works with powerful gestures that stage the bodies of committed artists of dance and music\, both active and meditative\, who transform our relationship to time and life. \n\n\n\nFounder of the renowned Zab Maboungou/Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata\, artist-choreographer and performer\, professor of philosophy and author\, Zab Maboungou has distinguished herself on all artistic and cultural action fronts. Her contribution\, remarkably\, unites and transcends identities and genres without ever diluting the knowledge and practices it has\, with a consistency that has never been denied. DESCRIPTION:NWT SPECIAL GUEST: Wesley HardistyIN PARTNERSHIP WITH BLACK ICE SOUND\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Crow-Chiu Duo is shifting expectations and the boundaries of classical chamber music. The powerhouse pair of Jonathan Crow (violin) and Phil Chiu (piano)bring a down-to-earth connection to their incredible artistry\, and a love of connecting to music-makers of today. Their “Quotations and Innovations” program explores music that evolves from elements of other music\, ranging from the music of the environment to classical masters to living Canadian composers\, including northerners! Special additions will include excerpts from Chiu’s2023 Juno-award recording of Barbara Assiginaak’s “Abundance of Insects”\, and guest musician Wesley Hardisty will share the stage alongside the Duo and supporting Yellowknife musicians. \n\n\n\nThe Crow-Chiu Duo will be joined by NWT Special Guest\, Wesley Hardisty:Wesley Hardisty’s fiddle playing is emotional and compelling.
