DESCRIPTION:Children of God is must-see theatre for Canadians. Marsha Lederman\, The Globe and Mail\n\n\n\nChildren of God is a musical about an Oji-Cree family whose children were taken away to a residential school in Northern Ontario. The story of Rita\, a mother who was never let past the school’s gate\, and her kids\, Tom and Julia\, who never knew she came\, pushes toward redemption. Children of God offers a blend of ancient traditions and contemporary realities\, celebrating resilience and the power of the Indigenous cultural spirit. Inspired by First Nations music\, Corey Payette’s moving score also includes echoes of provocative Broadway masterpieces such as Fun Home and Next to Normal.Children of God takes place in two time periods during the 1950s and 1970s\, and is set during a time when it is mandatory by law for all Indigenous children to attend residential schools.Performed in English and Anishinaabemowin\, this musical is a tremendously impactful piece that explores the history and intergenerational impacts of the residential school system and provides a platform for dialogue about what happened to Indigenous communities in Canada. \n\n\n\n\n“It’s an opportunity for our settler allies to experience the story seen through the eyes of an Indigenous family. He is a member of the Mattagami First Nations\, with French Canadian and Irish ancestry\, and lives on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səl’ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.Known for his deeply moving\, large-scale original musical creations\, Payette’s work challenges the public’s notion of what musicals can be\, inserting Indigenous perspectives and narratives into mainstream spaces\, igniting conversations that inspire social change. SUMMARY:Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:THE RITE OF SPRING\n\n\n\nIn Marie Chouinard’s work\, The Rite of Spring occupies a special position. In choosing to re-examine this powerful hymn to life\, she has created her first choreography based on a musical score. Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring explores a New World and marks the entry of dance into modernity. In this avant-garde work\, Marie Chouinard again finds an original pulsation that is essential to her movement. Far from contradicting the rhythm of her dance\, the cadence and force of the music inspire\, accompany and energize her\, forming both the echo and the musical counterpoint of an organic\, vigorous and vivid choreography. \n\n\n\n\nThere is no story in my Rite- no development\, no cause and effect. Only synchronicity. It is as if I were dealing with the very moment after the instant life first appeared. The performance is the unfolding of that moment. I have the feeling that before that moment there was an extraordinary burst of light\, a flash of lightning. \nMarie Chouinard\n\n\n\nPrelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\n\n\n\nWhen he wrote the Afternoon of a Faun in 1876\, Stéphane Mallarmé fulfilled a dream: to write poetry for the theatre. The poem’s musicality inspired Claude Debussy to compose Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun in 1894. In 1912\, in Paris\, Vaslav Nijinski created his first choreography\, based on Mallarmé’s poem. In it\, he gave life – intense and sensual life – to his own raw and animalistic erotic nature\, thereby abruptly breaking with classical tradition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis show contains partial nudity. DESCRIPTION:THIS PERFORMANCE IS DELAYED UNTIL 8:30PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA East Coast Treat!\n\n\n\nOld Man Luedecke is the recording and performing name of two-time JUNO award-winning and Polaris prize-nominated singer/songwriter Chris Luedecke. He’s a multiple East Coast Music Award winner known for his high-energy\, banjo-driven stompers\, touching guitar ballads\, and dry\, humorous stories. Old Man Luedecke has been making a soundtrack to an authentic life for nearly twenty years. \n\n\n\nBorn in Toronto and long-time resident of Chester\, Nova Scotia\, Luedecke began recording in the early 2000s DIY folk scene of Halifax. He made his two JUNO-winning albums for Black Hen Music in the late ‘00s\, with Steve Dawson as producer\, at Vancouver’s famed Factory studio. \n\n\n\nLuedecke has kept up many worldwide concert appearances\, playing in Europe and around Canada and the USA\, and six trips to Australia\, including a memorable tour where his whole young family travelled with him around rural Queensland for the Festival of Small Halls. \n\n\n\nIn May\, 2022\, Luedecke received an honorary doctorate from King’s University in Halifax for his cultural contributions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLATEST RELEASE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShe Told Me Where to Go is out now! DESCRIPTION:A brand-new concert made just for NACC with a rising opera star from New York & An ensemble of WORLD CLASS musicians!\n\n\n\nKofi Hayford is a young\, prize-winning Ghanaian-American bass\, described as possessing an “impressive\, “sonorous”\, and “stentorian bass voice”\, also produces a distinct sound – easily identified for its unique timbre. With almost 40 different operatic roles under his belt\, he is swiftly building his reputation as an accomplished artist by bringing an “exciting” and “stunning” sound to the stage. \n\n\n\nIn Yellowknife he performs with an ensemble of musicians of diverse backgrounds including Daniel Beliavsky who is an educator\, concert pianist\, music theorist\, composer\, and filmmaker. He has performed in Europe and throughout the United States with both orchestra and in recital–notable engagements include concerto performances with the Milwaukee and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. Joining the ensemble in Yellowknife is Dominican tenor José Heredia. Mr. Heredia was a 1st Prize Winner of the 2014 NJ Association of Verismo Opera International Vocal Competition\, and a finalist/encouragement award winner of the Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition in 2015 and 2017\, José Heredia has thrilled audiences with his voice of “Pavarottian shimmer.”  They will be accompanied by award-winning Mezzo-soprano Mary Beth Nelson\, who was recently praised by Opera News for her “ardent\, focused\, von-Stadean mezzo” with Juilliard Opera in Handel’s Atalanta with the Juilliard415 historical performance orchestra.  \n\n\n\nThe Northern Arts and Cultural Centre is thrilled to welcome Kofi Hayford and his ensemble to the stage again as the opener of our 40th Anniversary Season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ensemble\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Beliavsky\, Ph.D.\, is an educator\, concert pianist\, music theorist\, composer\, and filmmaker. Daniel produces music documentaries through his production company\, Opus1films\, which in 2011 released Sonata (1957)\, a film about the distinguished American composer Donald Harris’s opus one\, the Sonata for piano\, and about Harris’s early career in Paris. Now Chair of the Fine Art and Music Department at Yeshiva University in New York City\, Daniel has been a visiting professor of music theory\, piano performance\, aesthetics\, writing about music\, and history at several universities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA 1st Prize Winner of the 2014 NJ Association of Verismo Opera International Vocal Competition\, and a finalist/encouragement award winner of the Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition in 2015 and 2017\, Dominican tenor José Heredia has thrilled audiences with his voice of “Pavarottian shimmer.” Mr. Heredia started singing in a church in New York back in 2006. Uppercut Danseteater is a diverse and international dance company that was founded in 1982 by Cher Geurtze and Ann Crooset as one of the first modern companies in Denmark. DESCRIPTION:THE NORTHERN ASSEMBLY: INDEPENDENCE FOR THE NORTH!IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SNOWKING WINTER FESTIVAL\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNORDTING – The Northern Assembly•a nomadic people’s parliament of the North•a party for the periphery•a separatist movement for the Arctic. \n\n\n\nNORDTING is an enthusiastic and challenging mix of a political rally\, gala show and powerpoint lecture. Staged as a peoples’ assembly\, the ambition is to investigate questions concerning power\, identity\, art and economy in a local\, northern context. NORDTING addresses everything from global issues around geopolitics\, climate change and capitalism to very local issues from the place the assembly is held. Everything is adjusted for each new location -there is local history\, local guests and local issues put up for vote. Since the beginning in 2014\, NORDTING has arranged peoples’ assemblies all over the Arctic\, from Alaska to Greenland\, from Iceland to Norway. Thousands of people have made their voices heard. Assemblies have voted yes or no to oil drilling\, fish farming\, mining\, independence for the North\, new street names\, new airline routes\, new national days and taxation of the rich.There has been a lottery\, cheering\, praying\, flagging\, singing\, chanting\, moving\, voting – and thinking about what it means to be an Arctic inhabitant. The point of departure for NORDTING is the North\, but the issues addressed – of power\, economy\, local identity\, ownership to resources\, separatism and populism – are very much global and common for us all.NORDTING is a staged performance that deals with the identity and power structures of the North. Each musician brings their own individual interpretation to these traditions to create this extraordinary collaboration\, consisting of voices\, fiddle\, nyckelharpa\, cello\, bouzouki\, banjo\, and percussion. Collectively\, the band present an assortment of whirling polskas\, groovy reels\, passionate love songs\, breathtaking hymns\, and original compositions.All with the group are seasoned instructors eager to share their knowledge and love for their musical traditions. \n\n\n\nEmma Björling (lead voice\, shruti box\, percussion) is an award-winning Swedish singer\, composer\,arranger\, active in the renowned Scandinavian bands Kongero and Lyy. Both bands have toured the world\, and are busy in the European folk-trad scene. Emma regularly teaches and conducts workshops all over the world. \n\n\n\nAlex Kehler (fiddle\, nyckelharpa\, vocals) In addition to his work with Skye Consort\, he is a member of La Nef\, Soulwood\, Kehler Williams duo\, Les Siffleurs de Nuits\, and Triton. \n\n\n\nAmanda Keesmaat (cello\, vocals) Principal cellist of Arion Baroque orchestra\, Amanda Keesmaat has also performed with Les Charbonniers de L’Enfer\, OktoEcho\, Jean-François Bélanger and Projet ClaireObscur. \n\n\n\nSeán Dagher (cittern/bouzouki\, banjo & vocals)is the artistic director of La Nef and an active performer\, arranger\, and composer of music from various folk and classical music traditions. He won the OPUS “Creation of the Year” award in 2014 for Sea Songs and has been nominated for numerous Adisq awards \n\n\n\nSKYE CONSORT has been accompanying singers since 2000and has recorded 5 CDs with singers such as Matthew White\, Shannon Mercer\, and Michael Slattery on the ATMA\, ANALEKTA\, and OMBÜ record labels. \n\n\n\nSEÁN DAGHER is widely known for his recordings with the Assassin’s Creed video game series\, including Black Flag. His renditions of sea shanties and other songs from the games have been streamed some 70 million times. His own Shanty of the Week video series receives thousands of views each week\, and has a loyal following the world over.

DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY-NOMINATED GUESTS FROM NORWAY \n\n\n\nANNA MARIA FRIMAN / LINN ANDREA FUGLSETH / JORUNN LOVISE HUSAN \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe crystalline voices of Trio Mediaeval have captivated audiences since the group was founded in Oslo in 1997. The Grammy-nominated trio’s core repertoire features sacred monophonic and polyphonic medieval music from England\, Italy and France; contemporary works written for the ensemble; and traditional Norwegian\, Swedish and Icelandic ballads and songs. The group’s fruitful relationship with the legendary ECM Records\, collaborative spirit\, and busy touring schedule has earned them worldwide renown.  \n\n\n\nTrio Mediaeval’s first of eight albums on ECM Records\, Words of the Angel\, landed on Billboard’s Top 10 and was a Stereophile “Recording of the Month.” Further releases on ECM followed in 2004 with Soir\, dit-elle and in 2005 with Stella Maris. The first three recordings\, produced by John Potter\, consisted of medieval and contemporary works. In 2007\, the trio teamed with the Norwegian percussionist Birger Mistereggen on a recording of Norwegian ballads and songs entitled Folk Songs\, produced by Manfred Eicher. Folk Songs was nominated for the Norwegian Spellemannprisen and for a Grammy Award for “Best Chamber Music Performance.” A Worcester Ladymass (2011) was also on Billboard’s Top 10 list\, and was selected by the German Record Critic’s Award as one of the best new releases in the “Early Music” category. The trio’s Aquilonis was named a “Top Music Recording of 2014” by the New York Times. In 2017\, Trio Mediaeval and jazz trumpeter Arve Henriksen released Rímur — medieval and folk music from Iceland\, Sweden and Norway. In 2020 Trio Mediaeval produced the album Solacium on the Norwegian label 2L\, with Grammy-winning Morten Lindberg as producer/engineer. In 2023\, 2L releases Trio Mediaeval’s latest recording\, An Old Hall Ladymass.  \n\n\n\nSince 2006\, the trio has embarked on a number of collaborative projects with Norwegian jazz/improvisational musicians. Set in Plains Cree territory in the 1870s\, before the establishment of First Nations reserves\, Pawâkan Macbeth takes place in a time when First Nations warred with each other and the Canadian Government over territory\, food supplyand trade. Harsh environments brought immense fear\, starvation\, and uncertainty together to awaken the darkest of Cree spirits\, the Wihtiko – an evil being with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. Inspired from stories shared by Indigenous Elders in Frog Lake First Nation following protocol\, Arluk has created a new\,visceral experience of Macbeth; a convergence of Shakespeare’s language\, modern English\, and Cree. As historical wars are waged with the Cree and Nakodaagainst the Blackfoot\, Macikosisân (Macbeth)\, a great Okihcitâw (warrior)\, becomes consumed by the cannibal spirit Wihtiko. DESCRIPTION:(PRONOUNCED “PILK-SILK”) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty\, sisters Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay come together to create an Inuit-style throat singing duo\, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions\, they leave their listeners enthralled with the infinity of possible answers to the question “What is the meaning of life?”  \n\n\n\nWith roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq\, the sisters grew up in Yellowknife\, Northwest Territories. Their love of katajjaq\, Inuit throat singing\, began in childhood and has bonded them throughout their lives. After years of forging this hard-won skill\, they developed their own form blended with their love of haunting melodies and otherworldly sounds.  \n\n\n\nAs PIQSIQ\, they perform improvisational looping live\, creating a dynamic audience experience that changes with every show. PIQSIQ incorporates their dark and ethereal style into their recordings and have produced four studio albums to date.
