SUMMARY:Heart of the Dene Storytelling Festival: Fort Smith
DESCRIPTION:Heart of the DeneIN PARTNERSHIP WITH Northwestel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaggie Mercredi is Denesoline from Gani Koe’ and is a member of the Kai Taile’ Dene First Nation. With a vivid imagination since childhood\, she could visualize the stories heard around her\, understanding them\, then re-sharing them in her own way. She was introduced to the performing arts as a young adult\, inspiring her to learn more about theatre. She joined various performance groups\, became a co-founder of an Indigenous theatre group in the North\,graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in Toronto\, and completed storytelling and music residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts. With the skills and knowledge gained\, she has written\, directed\, and produced for many venues. She has also coached groups in theatre and performance skills training. Maggie is honoured and excited with the opportunity to write alongside other artists in bringing alive the stories we carry from our language\,our ancestors\, our parents\, our family\, friends and communities for the future generations to enjoy\,long after we are gone. \n\n\n\nDavid Gon is Tlicho. He was born in Yellowknife and raised in the bush with the traditional way of life. He then moved to Behchoko to start school. He grew up listening to the beat of the drum and watched people dance to the rhythm. He taught himself how to play when he was 12 years old\, on a guitar his father bought him. David later formed a band called ‘Captain Eddy’.David has written his own songs and recorded albums of original music. His music is the expression of the value of the old ways as well as the new\, using the traditional Dene drum\, reflecting early influences and admiration of the wisdom\, stories and songs of the land\,his ancestors\, the Elders and the hopes and dreams of the young people. David has performed at Expo 86 in Vancouver\, at the Canada Winter Games in Cape Breton in 1987\, at Culture Canada in Ottawa in 1988\, and the Arctic Winter Games in 1990. \n\n\n\nCassandra (River) Blondin Burt is a two-spirit Dene Poet\, Artist\, and Earth Medicine Maker. Their work is grounded in the exploration of healing through co-creation with earth and story. Cassandra believes that the radical act of being in-relation to our other-than-human-relations is an act of political and personal rebellion\,and a pathway for collective and personal transformation and healing.Through a deepening relationship with the land-body we call Earth\, Cassandra explores regenerative art and creation praxis that allows them to move through myriad contemporary settler-colonial social structures and ideologies with intent\, and curiosity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

SUMMARY:NACC Presents: MOZONGI
DESCRIPTION:By NYATA-NYATA Dance Company\n\n\n\nMozongi (Return) is a piece about time and\, more precisely\, the physics of time. The step is weight\, and weight is time. Not repetition\, but persistence. The structure of Mozongi thus unfolds through the contrasts of movement and immobility\, of the one and of the many\, to give shape to a primordial conflict – that of time\, which consumes space. Zab Maboungou/Compagnie Danse Nyata-Nyata has traced the trajectories of a revised and corrected contemporaneity for more than three decades. Zab Maboungou assumes the general and artistic direction of the company\, founded in 1987. As its choreographer\, and through her renewed art of rhythms and vibrant space\, he creates works with powerful gestures that stage the bodies of committed artists of dance and music\, both active and meditative\, who transform our relationship to time and life. \n\n\n\nFounder of the renowned Zab Maboungou/Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata\, artist-choreographer and performer\, professor of philosophy and author\, Zab Maboungou has distinguished herself on all artistic and cultural action fronts. Her contribution\, remarkably\, unites and transcends identities and genres without ever diluting the knowledge and practices it has\, with a consistency that has never been denied. She has innovated and developed to propose a living art\, that is to say\, an art which goes beyond stories and communities and wants to stage beings and their time.Born in Paris but coming from Congo-Brazzaville\, she grew up in a post-independence atmosphere\, where she was introduced to dance. Zab Maboungou managed to translate and establish another presence and focus for the imagination\, thanks to her work and its involvement in artistic and cultural development. \n\n\n\n\n“…an unforgettable contemporary African dance. Mozongi is a dance of tremendous strength and purpose. In this immensely powerful performance\, a mere four dancers manage to suggest the presence of thousands.” \nLinde-Howe-Beck\, The Gazette\, 2001\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZab Maboungou\n\n\nZab Maboungou knows how to inhabit a scenic space\, not only physically but also mentally\, even spiritually. SUMMARY:NACC Presents: BENCHED
DESCRIPTION:UPPERCUT DANSETEATREINTERNATIONAL GUESTS FROM DENMARK\n\n\n\nBENCHED is a brutally honest bodily tale about life’s big and very small questions. About settling down. About daring to sit in opposition\, about sitting cross legged\, about being sat\, put off or benched. About taking\, creating\, and giving space\, and preferably remembering to do so before falling on your ass where the bench ends. Uppercut Danseteater is a diverse and international dance company that was founded in 1982 by Cher Geurtze and Ann Crooset as one of the first modern companies in Denmark. BENCHED is a classic Uppercut Danseteater piece\, in the way that the individual dancers’ background\, stories and strengths both as persons and performers\, are brought to the stage. With a starting point in the dance genres they have trained in- such as break\, contemporary dance\,street dance genres and capoeira -BENCHED fuses the many languages of dance into a dynamic physical performance that encompasses all of life’s emotions: Joy\, anger\, confusion\, humor\, love\, compassion\, frustration…the list goes on. \n\n\n\nCREDITS\n\n\n\nCONCEPT & CHOREOGRAPHYStephanie Thomasen\, in collaboration with the dancersSCENOGRAPHYJohan KølkjærLIGHT DESIGNPeter LøkkeDANCERSFive dancers from Uppercut Danseteater’s ensemble\, amongst others\, Mark Philip\, Kriss Mensa\, Adam Tocuyo and Jens Schyth BrøndumThe performance is supported by The Danish Arts Foundation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

SUMMARY:NACC Presents: Johnny Cole - Meet me at The Rex
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of Metis Roots\n\n\n\nFor fifty years\, Norman Glowach has been playing music in Yellowknife. He started playing the drums\, but he also sings and plays guitar. Growing up in Yellowknife\, Norm has been fortunate to play many styles of music. At an early age\, he played in school bands and stage bands. Professionally\, he’s played old time music\, fiddle music\, country music\, rock & roll\, jazz and blues. These musical experiences all come out in the music he writes and records. He has run his studio\, Spiritwalker Productions\, for over 30 years in downtown Yellowknife. Norm credits the driving force behind his persona Johnny Cole and the musical Meet Me at the Rex to be the pictures and stories of his family’s history. Norman started Meet Me at the Rex eleven years ago when he began searching for ancestors on his mother’s side. At that time\, he was working at the NWT Archives. This gave him an understanding of how to access data from the various levels of archives in Canada. As information and images came forward about his ancestors\, songs started to come to him. At that point\, he didn’t have the idea of creating a production containing these songs – he was just trying to understand his roots. He began to understand his ancestors’ role in the development of Canada. \n\n\n\nIn his search\, Norm was able to find French and Irish roots in the Red River Colony who mixed with Indigenous peoples\, creating the Métis who populated Western Canada. As the show was coming together\, long-time friends came forward to give him direction. One friend told him the roots he was writing about had a common theme: a story that was similar to that of many other Métis in our country. This gave focus to the project and has been a theme in shaping this show. Norm’s family roots run deep in Canada. Over the years\, the branches stretched to Yellowknife. The production is called Meet Me at the Rex as an homage to Norman’s grandparents\, who were the owners of this popular cafe from 1941 -1966. The Rex was a meeting place and home to many stories of how his family came to Yellowknife. He chose the 1950s time period to tell the story as this was a significant era for the Café. Norm has said\, “At times\, I’ve felt like my ancestors were guiding me in the writing of the songs\, the searching for information\, and are present during the live productions.” \n\n\n\nCome on in\, sit down\, and have some coffee and pie. Meet me at the Rex. \n\n\n\nYellowknife PerformanceNorman Glowach – Johnny ColeDave Martineau – Guitar and VocalsPaul Martineau – Drums and VocalsPat Braden – Bass and VocalsLaura Vinson – VocalsKaren Shepard – Fiddle and VocalsTyler Hawkins – Guitar and VocalsPaul White – Piano and Vocals \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

SUMMARY:Johnny Cole - Meet me at The Rex in Norman Wells
DESCRIPTION:Celebration of his Metis Roots\n\n\n\nFor fifty years\, Norman Glowach has been playing music in Yellowknife. \n\n\n\nNorman Wells PerformanceNorman Glowach – Johnny ColeDave Martineau – Guitar and VocalsPaul Martineau – Drums and VocalsPat Braden – Bass and VocalsLaura Vinson – VocalsKaren Shepard – Fiddle and Vocals \n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Family Package Adult $15\, Youth $5 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

SUMMARY:World After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Such a beautifully evocative mix of dance\, theatre and poetry. Dana Lafarga\, RBC\n\n\n\nWorld After Dark is a new\, Dora Mavor Moore Award-nominated production by Shannon Litzenberger Contemporary Dance. It explores the erosion of our relationship to night\, inspired by Christopher Dewdney’s popular book Acquainted with the Night: Excursions through the world after dark. From the three stages of nightfall to the science of the cosmos\, from the birth of nightlife to the empire of dreams\, from the biology of nocturnal creatures to the mythology of the night sky\, World After Dark takes us on an epic voyage through the mysteries of night\, inviting us to reclaim the night – a metaphor for the sensual\, the embodied\, and the feminine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA New Multi-Media Dance Theatre Experience\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEHIND THE WORK\n\n\n\n\n\nA choreographer\, dancer\, producer\, director\, and artsblog facilitator\, Shannon Litzenberger is known for creating live performance experiences at the intersection of forms. Rooted in dance\, Litzenberger’s innovative collaborations come to life in conversation with theatre\, literary and visual arts. Her perspective is decidedly feminist\, philosophical\, and socially conscious. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour work brought me back to the wintry dark skies in the northern part of Canada during a blackout. It was like seeing inside myself. Yvonne Ng\, Artistic Director\, d:mic festival\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

SUMMARY:Northern Arts and Cultural Centre 40th Anniversary Showcase
DESCRIPTION:NACC’s 40th Anniversary will be a celebration of exceptional talent and dynamic northern art forms from across the broad expanse of Denendeh. From the great fiddling dynasties flowing deep and swiftly like the great Deh Cho river to the shining lights of Indigenous theatre born and raised on this very stage\, the show will celebrate some of the major milestones and remember some of the brilliant and cutting-edge performers who have shared their art and found their spotlight at NACC. For one halcyon night\, community groups and northern stars will join together to lift up the memories and raise their voices in a joyful chorus. Like a giant drum dance or a triumphant handgame\, celebrating 40 years of the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre will be a jubilant evening not to be missed. \n\n\n\nJoin us at 6:45PM for a pre-show reception\, which will include free snacks and a complimentary beverage. This reception will also feature a silent auction with items you do not want to miss out on\, a toy drive with Northwestel\, and more. Come early to connect with other long-time and new supporters of NACC and celebrate 40 years with us! \n\n\n\nSponsored by \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nÉcole St Patrick High School\, Aurora Ukrainian Dancers\, Lady Slipper Lodge\, Williams Electronics\, Energy Wall\, TC Enterprises\, and Lou Sebert \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurating The Evening\n\n\n\n\n\nLeela Gilday is a celebrated musician and advocate from Denendeh. I hope you love it as much as I do. From the beautiful artwork to the beautiful hooky playing of Afie Jurvanen\, Darcy Yates\, Joshua Van Tassel and Glenn Patscha\, to the currents of many types of love running through it.   \nOld Man Ludecke on his new album\, She Told Me Where to Go\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn an Old Man Luedecke show\, there will be some very modern sounding songs about love\, family life\, the importance of friends\, and the search for meaning; some traditional music reminiscent of Appalachian old-time music\, including high-energy banjo driven stompers; and some wickedly funny songs about the joy of cooking\, sardines\, and yodelling.
